Teaching Standard C: Manages Classroom Climate Narrative
Creating a community of learners is essential to my teaching practice. During my student teaching practicum, I effectively created an environment that was conducive to learning; helped to cultivate a physical environment appropriate to a range of learning activities; maintained appropriate standards of behavior; and managed classroom routines and procedures successfully and efficiently.

A large portion of my time spent in the classroom was dedicated to making sure that the classroom was neat, organized, and appeasing to the eye. I worked diligently to make sure that all papers were copied prior to my lesson, pencils were sharpened, and any supplies or resources needed were available and ready to use. I also created anchor charts and other learning materials that were colorful, content focused, and kid-friendly. I felt that having a cheerful classroom contributed to the learning experience of my students.

Another portion of my student teaching was directed towards maintaining appropriate standards of behavior that were based on mutual respect and safety. The Ohrenberger’s School Motto is “My job is to show respect, work hard, and be responsible”. Classroom rules were also posted in the front of the room for all students to see. I found myself reminding students of Ohrenberger School motto and referring to the classroom rules on a daily basis. I also utilized an effort/respect color chart to promote good behavior and best effort amongst my students. Students responded well to this system and were motivated to perform up to their best abilities in order to have their clips moved up the chart, rather than down. I found this strategy to be extremely helpful as a way to monitor and publicly acknowledge good and/or bad performance and behaviors throughout the day.

Student procedures were effectively integrated into my teaching practice as well. Realizing how important student roles are to promote independence and responsibility amongst students, I made sure to make use of student jobs as often as I could. Student jobs helped to make transitions go more smoothly during the day. Transitions in class were also facilitated by procedures that helped to minimize the loss of instructional time. Through the use of certain approaches like counting down, using digital timers, and turning the lights off, I was able to manage class transitions time in an effective way.

A conducive learning environment will optimize student learning, promote efficiency, and foster a sense of mutual respect amongst students and the teacher. Standard C – Manages Classroom Climate and Operation
1. Creates an environment that is conducive to learning.
  • Makes sure that student materials are available and ready to use each morning (pencils, paper, worksheets, etc.).
  • Reminds students that, “everyone learns at a different pace” and recognizes good behavior.
  • Models a positive attitude and creates an atmosphere of respect and understanding.
2. Creates a physical environment appropriate to a range of learning activities.
  • Helps to ensure that classroom is neat and organized.
  • Assists cooperating teacher in designing a seating chart that is conducive to the learning behaviors and needs of the students within that group.
  • Creates visually stimulating anchor charts and posters to place around the classroom.
3. Maintains appropriate standards of behavior, mutual respect, and safety.
  • Continually reinforces school motto: “My job is to work show, show respect and be responsible.”
  • Uses positive reinforcement to encourage student behavior and work ethic.
  • Classroom rules and expectations are posted for all students to see.
  • Utilizes effort/respect chart as a way to motivate and/or reprimand students for classroom behaviors.
  • Practices immediate intervention when student tension arises to avoid conflict.
4. Manages classroom routines and procedures without loss of significant instructional time.
  • Assigns student jobs on a monthly basis to ensure that students can experience a variety of classroom responsibilities.
  • Counts down from five to regain student attention.
  • Uses digital timer to help keep track of time.
  • Update schedule daily so students are aware of any changes.
